For the past several years The Village of Northfield in cooperation with a private engineering firm has been developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) to help facilitate and locate different identifiers of information throughout the Village. A GIS is a locational and geographic database, which can store and retrieve information of places and objects based on their physical location ranging from address locations, utilities, crime instances and more. If you watched your local weather forecast on T.V. today, or if you logged onto the internet for driving directions you have already experienced some of the capabilities of what GIS can do. In the future the Village hopes to continue to expand the scope and capabilities of its GIS in order to accomplish a range of capabilities such as remote field information for emergency service crews, updated land parcel maps, improved zoning and floodplain maps as well as accurate underground locations of structures.
