Refuse Disposal

Basic single-family refuse and recycling service provides once a week pickup at the curb on Thursdays. Containers can be placed at the curb for pick up no earlier than 5:00pm the day prior to pick up and no later than 7:00am the day of collection.

Containers must be removed no later than 8:00am the day after collection. Waste and recycling service is billed by the waste hauler. The waste hauler also provides a village-wide clean up day in spring, collection of holiday trees, wreaths and garland the first two weeks of January.

Call Waste Management, 1-800-796-9696, to arrange for service and any optional services including a pickup of waste on Mondays, back door service, landscape waste pickup, special pickup of large household items, construction debris and purchase or rental of waste and/or recycling toters.

Holiday Refuse Disposal

Holiday waste collections will be made with a one-day delay following a holiday that occurs during the week or on a Sunday. For example, if the holiday falls on a Sunday or Monday, Monday pickups will be on Tuesday and so forth. Holiday schedules are observed for the following holidays only: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. To receive a waste and recycling collection guide, contact the Village Hall.

Recycling & Yard Waste Disposal

Northfield is a community committed to saving landfill space by recycling. Waste Management (WM) provides a recycling toter in 35 and 64-gallon sizes. It is the only container permitted for use in disposing of recyclable materials and is available by calling Waste Management at 1-800-796-9696.

There is a $1.00 per toter, per month rental fee, which is billed direct to residents or a one-time purchase price of $50.00 per toter. Most waste can be recycled including aluminum, steel and tin cans; glass bottles and jars (brown, green and clear glass); plastic bottles including soda, milk and water bottles, plastic laundry detergent containers, shampoo bottles, deli and cosmetic containers, six and twelve pack plastic rings, paper of all types including newspapers, magazines and catalogs, telephone directories, boxes – cereal, tissue, frozen food, pizza; junk mail, computer and copy paper and other mixed paper. Back door service is available for an additional fee. Elderly and/or disabled residents can receive free back door service by contacting the Village Hall to sign up.

Yard Waste Disposal

Yard Waste is an optional service that must be contracted for with Waste Management. It is collected weekly on Mondays from April through the first week in December. Grass, leaves and garden waste must be kept separate from other waste for disposal in a composting landfill. Customers must collect yard waste in biodegradable paper bags. Paper bags are available at most stores and need not have “Northfield” written on them. Residents also have the option of placing yard waste in non-disposable plastic containers clearly marked “yard waste”. Call Waste Management at 1-800-796-9696 for information or a price schedule.

Pilot Composting Program

Waste Management is offering a voluntary subscription-based pilot curbside composting program to all homes, businesses, and community organizations. Compostable items include yard waste, food scraps, and other organic materials. Unacceptable items include pet waste, dairy cartons, grease, and oil.
