The Northfield Police Department has received an increase in complaints about the unsafe use of electric scooters and electric bicycles around town. While these devices can be a fun, eco-friendly, and efficient way to get around, unsafe riding puts both the rider and others at risk.
Know the Law - Electric Scooters
- Not permitted on public roads: The Village of Northfield prohibits the use of electric scooters on public roadways.
- Sidewalk use discouraged: While not outright banned, riding on sidewalks is strongly discouraged. If you do, remember to always yield to pedestrians and to give an audible warning before passing.
Know the Law - Electric Bicycles
- Permitted on public roads: E-bikes are allowed, but riders must follow the same traffic rules as regular bicycles.
- Class 3 restriction: These higher-powered e-bikes are only for riders 16 and older.
- Sidewalks are off-limits: State law prohibits e-bike use on sidewalks— stick to the roads or bike paths
Whether you’re on an electric scooter or e-bike, make sure to:
- Wear a helmet – every ride, every time.
- Look both ways at all intersections.
- Be respectful of other riders and pedestrians.
- Stay alert – avoid distractions like phones or headphones.
Let’s keep our community safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the Police Department.
