Residents may dispose of old or unwanted household items during the Village-Wide Clean-Up Day on Saturday, May 9. All items must be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM. Hazardous waste, construction debris, landscape waste, and appliances will not be collected. All items must weigh less than 50 pounds. Residents wishing to dispose of appliances should contact Waste Management at (800) 796-9696 to schedule a special pickup.

Arrange a FREE pickup to donate gently-used furniture to the Chicago Furniture Bank! The Village has partnered with Go Green Northfield to organize furniture pickup days on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8. Donate gently-used furniture to help transform the living spaces of individuals and families in need in the Chicago area. Tables, chairs, dressers, mattresses, couches, lounge chairs, lamps, and kitchenware are accepted. All donations are tax-deductible. Sustainability is key to this project, and all items will be used or repurposed by Chicago Furniture Bank. Simply choose a date, complete the request form, and help those in need! Liz Roche, the visionary behind Centered Wellness, has been in the well-care space for over 20 years and is approaching her ninth anniversary in Northfield.  Back in 2000, armed with a finance degree and rose-colored glasses, Liz embarked on what should have been a successful finance career. However, she learned that a sit-down desk job was not the correct path, however exciting it appeared on paper. 

Liz became certified to teach Pilates in 2002 and earned her license to practice massage therapy in 2004. She received her Functional Diagnostic Nutrition certification in 2024 and a degree in hypnotherapy in December 2025.   

Liz is fascinated by the human experience and hopes to impact clients by understanding health concerns from a truly holistic perspective. Utilizing her education in physiology, biomechanics/movement, energy frequencies, and behavioral patterning, Liz is prepared to help you achieve your wellness goals.

March is Youth Art Month, and the Village is excited to celebrate by featuring Middlefork students through the end of April!   Youth Art Month emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and provides a forum for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences that are not possible in other curriculum subjects. Please stop by to view the art any time Village Hall is open, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.  

Celebrate Northfield's 100th birthday with stories of where we came from

Construction is currently underway on a water main improvement project along the west side of W. Frontage Road, approximately between the curve near Central Avenue and the south end of Fields. This project is part of the Village’s ongoing investment in maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure.

The $880,000 project will replace a section of water main that is more than 80 years old and has experienced repeated breaks over time. Once complete, the new water main will significantly improve water quality and system reliability for residents and businesses in the area. Construction is expected to take approximately six weeks, weather permitting, and may be extended if temperatures become too cold.

The work is being performed by Everlast Blacktop, an experienced water main contractor. Ciorba Consulting Engineers are overseeing the project on behalf of the Village to ensure quality and safety throughout construction.

The Northfield Police Department has received an increase in complaints about the unsafe use of electric scooters and electric bicycles around town. While these devices can be a fun, eco-friendly, and efficient way to get around, unsafe riding puts both the rider and others at risk. 

Know the Law - Electric Scooters

• Not permitted on public roads: The Village of Northfield prohibits the use of electric scooters on public roadways.
• Sidewalk use discouraged: While not outright banned, riding on sidewalks is strongly discouraged. If you do, remember to always yield to pedestrians and to give an audible warning before passing.

Know the Law - Electric Bicycles

• Permitted on public roads: E-bikes are allowed, but riders must follow the same traffic rules as regular bicycles. 
• Class 3 restriction: These higher-powered e-bikes are only for riders 16 and older.
• Sidewalks are off-limits: State law prohibits e-bike use on sidewalks— stick to the roads or bike paths

Whether you’re on an electric scooter or e-bike, make sure to:

• Wear a helmet – every ride, every time.
• Look both ways at all intersections.
• Be respectful of other riders and pedestrians.
• Stay alert – avoid distractions like phones or headphones.

The Village continues to move forward with the Skokie Valley Trail project, a community goal 20 years in the making. When completed, this multi-modal path will run from Chicago to Lake Bluff. Through a cooperative effort with Skokie, Wilmette, and Glenview - and lots of public input- Northfield developed an innovative approach to move this project forward that protects natural resources and minimizes residential impacts. The Phase I work has been finalized (click here for the Phase I PDR) and the Village began Phase II (detailed engineering) in 2022.  Phase II is anticipated to conclude mid-2026. Phase III (construction) is dependent on the receipt of grant funding.

Currently, the nearly 10-mile-long existing asphalt trail runs from Lake Bluff south to Dundee Road in Northbrook. It picks up again in Skokie, where it provides easy access to both the Dempster and Oakton CTA Yellow Line stations.  The current project closes the gap in the trail connecting with Voltz Road in Northbrook on the north and Old Orchard Road in Skokie on the south.

The Phase II Study is being led by the Village of Northfield in partnership with the communities of Glenview, Wilmette, and Skokie.  Phase II has an estimated cost of $774,634, with $619,707 in grant funding from The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and $150,000 from an Invest in Cook grant.
